Fremont Pavilion

‘We want something unexpected’ – that was the charge delivered to the Ground Workshop team. With a modest budget and high expectations, we began our work developing this site gateway on the Pearly District’s waterfront. Envisioned as a folly on the river, The Fremont Pavilion leverages its territorial views of the Willamette River and Fremont Bridge to yield a dynamic and engaging meeting space along the City of Portland’s Willamette Greenway. Acting as part shelter, part sculpture, part convening space, the Pavilion’s skeletal frame and suspended wood infill recalls a forest canopy, resulting in an ever-changing shadow mosaic on the occupied zones below. Custom seating & walk-up counters utilize integrated lighting and power receptacles to ensure flexible, multi-purpose use. Whether partaking in a sunrise or grabbing a selfie, the Fremont Pavilion embraces impromptu visits with open invitation.

Ground Workshop was proud to collaborate with Catena Engineers and TVA Architects on this project.
